Summer & Winter Activities
Summer brings the swimming pool and sweeping views over Salzburg, whilst winter offers the tranquil expanse of snow-covered winter walking trails around the Gaisberg and Salzburg’s old town in its wintry finery – the seasons follow one another, each with its own charm.
Whether right here at the hotel, on the Gaisberg or further afield in the beautiful Salzkammergut – there’s always a reason to stay here, whatever the season. Discover your mountain hideaway: on your own, for a romantic break for two, or with the family.
Summer at Die Gersberg Alm offers plenty to enjoy right here in our own gardens: a panoramic pool, a tennis court and a peaceful sun terrace provide plenty of variety, even before you’ve set off on your first excursion.
Outdoor pool with sunbathing area: The panoramic pool with its sunbathing area is a rare treat for a hotel of our size – like a private cove surrounded by greenery. Between swimming, sunbathing and the sweeping views over Salzburg, the afternoon at our mountain hotel simply flies by.
Tennis court: The hotel’s own tennis court is available between breakfast and dinner, so close it feels as though it’s part of your own garden – with no need to travel or book a court elsewhere.

E-bike hire & cycling: On an e-bike, the surrounding area unfolds like a map that unfolds of its own accord – from a gentle ride up the Gaisberg to a trip into town. The bikes are ready and waiting right here at the hotel; the landscape takes care of the rest.
Cuisine & Summer Events: In our outdoor dining area, we serve hot meals throughout the day from Monday to Saturday – down-to-earth yet sophisticated, under the guidance of head chef Florian Dornstauder. In summer, there are special events to look forward to: the SummerSoul BBQ and the Jazz Brunch bring a sense of conviviality and great music to the day.

If you’d like to explore beyond Die Gersberg Alm, you won’t have to go out of your way: nature, the town and the wider region are strung together like pearls on a necklace, all within easy reach. Our hotel is situated right in the heart of the Gaisberg – walks of all lengths start literally on your doorstep.
Those wishing to venture further afield will find other hiking areas in the region, each with its own character:
- Gaisberg: The Gaisberg circular walk from the Zistelalm is an easy panoramic route with views of Salzburg and takes around one and a half hours.
- Salzburg’s city hills: On the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg, you can go for a walk right in the heart of the city, with views over the old town.
- Untersberg: The ascent via the Dopplersteig is one of the region’s best-known routes.
- Tennengau: Near Hallein, a popular circular walk leads to the striking Barmstein peaks.
- Osterhorn Group: The panoramic circular trail on the Zwölferhorn near St. Gilgen offers views of Lake Wolfgang, the Schafberg and the surrounding mountains.
- Salzkammergut: The Fuschlsee Circular Trail is a family-friendly walk around eleven kilometres long.
Salzburg’s Old Town, with its narrow streets, squares and museums, is just a short distance from Die Gersberg Alm – almost like a second front garden – making it ideal for a morning outing or a full day’s excursion.
- Hohensalzburg Fortress: One of the largest preserved castle complexes in Europe, perched high above the Old Town and accessible on foot or by the fortress funicular.
- Getreidegasse: A historic shopping street featuring wrought-iron guild signs and the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
- Mirabell Gardens: Baroque palace gardens with a view of Hohensalzburg Fortress – the setting for The Sound of Music, where Julie Andrews once danced on the steps of the Pegasus Fountain.
- Salzburg Cathedral & Residenzplatz: Baroque cathedral and the adjacent central square with the Residenzbrunnen fountain, surrounded by magnificent historic buildings.

- Salzburg Festival: Every summer, Salzburg becomes a global cultural stage. From mid-July to the end of August, international stars from the worlds of drama, opera and music come together with culture lovers from all over the world at the Salzburg Festival venues.
- Sommerszene: Contemporary theatre, dance and performance take over various venues across the city in early summer.
- Electric Love Festival: One of Europe’s biggest electronic music festivals transforms the Salzburgring into a three-day spectacle in July.
- Live in Salzburg: In July and August, the city hosts a variety of free open-air events. The highlights are the major concert evenings in the Volksgarten.
- Sternenkino: On balmy summer evenings, the Kapitelplatz is transformed into an open-air cinema – films under the stars, free of charge and right in the heart of the Old Town.
Canyoning in the Wiestal
Things get a bit more action-packed in the nearby Wiestal valley, where rock and water come together in a dynamic interplay: amidst gorges and rapids, you can experience canyoning here.
Paragliding
The Gaisberg is one of the best-known launch sites for paragliders in the Salzburg region – for anyone who prefers to enjoy the view from above, as if through the eyes of a bird.

Even when there’s snow on the ground, nobody has to miss out on exercise or socialising – here, winter simply changes the backdrop, not the programme.
Sauna area & relaxation: After a day outdoors, our small sauna area transforms into a place where warmth and tranquillity complement each other: the Finnish sauna, steam room and infrared cabin invite you to warm up – and to enjoy the sort of moment of stillness you’d search for in vain out there in the snow.
Culinary winter evenings: Our gourmet cuisine also has its own winter season – in late autumn, the traditional goose dinner is on the menu, and on New Year’s Eve the hotel is transformed into a festive venue to see out the year. In between, the restaurant remains what it is all year round: a place of indulgence.
Indoor bowling alley: The hotel’s own bowling alley knows no season – no matter how deep the snow is outside, inside in the warmth it remains a piece of a bygone era.

Even away from Die Gersberg Alm, the region reveals a side all of its own in winter: quieter, clearer, with a pace that seems to follow the snow itself.
Winter walking & snowshoeing: Snow-covered paths are perfect for winter walks and snowshoe tours – offering the same panoramic views as in summer, but bathed in a tranquil white.
Ski touring & cross-country skiing: Those who prefer a more active holiday will find opportunities for ski touring and cross-country skiing in the Salzburg region, without having to travel far.
Spas in the Salzburg region: For a day of tranquillity away from the slopes, the Salzburg region offers several spas within easy reach – a perfect way to round off the day, balancing the cold outside with the warmth inside.
Advent markets & culture: During Advent, both Salzburg’s Old Town and the surrounding area reveal their festive side – from the famous Christmas markets in the city to smaller, atmospheric markets in the neighbouring villages. Our unique mountain location is ideal for your next Advent break in Salzburg.
